Vector or pixel?
A pixel image (a photo) has a fixed resolution and degrades when enlarged. A vector object scales with no loss whatsoever. For a logo that has to work on anything from a business card to a banner, vector is essential.
Best practice
Keep your logos and icons as vectors, with text converted to outlines. Avoid rebuilding a logo from a low-resolution screenshot: track down the original vector file instead (usually .ai, .eps, .pdf or .svg).
