The PDF/X-4 standard
When exporting, choose the PDF/X-4 standard whenever your software offers it. It was designed for print: managed colour, live transparencies and a reliable file structure.
The export checklist
A compliant print PDF means:
- Created at the final size, 1:1 scale.
- CMYK colour mode, ICC profile matched to the paper.
- 2 mm bleed (unless stated otherwise), 4 mm safety zone.
- Resolution of at least 300 dpi (200 for posters, 150 for large format).
- Fonts embedded or text converted to outlines.
- No password or security restrictions.
- All pages the same size and orientation.
Which software?
Professional layout applications produce the most reliable PDFs. Office suites are built for the screen (RGB) and can shift colours; if you use one, double-check the conversion to CMYK. Free lightweight PDF printers are rarely suitable for professional printing.
